I think we have all learned by now that the most reliable thing in our lives is Netflix. It’s always by our side and seems to never disappoint us when we need it the most. And while people love to binge watch all of their favorite shows all night long, they often complain about the lack of quality movies on Netflix. And while yes, there are a plethora of odd and unwatchable movies on Netflix, if you look hard enough you can find some real solid gems. Here is my list of the 10 movies on Netflix that you need to watch right now! They range everywhere from documentaries to horror films and were released anywhere from 1973 to 2014. So grab some popcorn and M&M’s and sit back and relax to these amazing movies on Netflix.

1. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008)

Pain. Hatred. Sadness. Grief. Disappointment. Love. Admiration. Happiness. Anger. Shock. Heartbreak. These are all of the emotions that you will feel while watching this roller coaster of a ride documentary. If you haven’t heard anything about this movie. GOOD. Don’t read anything about this movie because the less you know about it, the better the movie experience will be for you. It’s a movie that I could hype up every time, and it would never disappoint because it’s just that good. It’s not only one of the best documentaries ever made, but one of the best movies ever made. PERIOD. GO WATCH IT. NOW. PLEASE. NOW.

2. Good Will Hunting (1997)

The film that made me fall in love with movies and the powerful effect they can have on your life. Good Will Hunting is one of the most original, clever, romantic, heartbreaking and realistic movies you’ll ever see. And yeah yeah I know Ben Affleck is pretty much a joke of an actor right now, but don’t ever forget that he gave one of the best performances in this movie as the caring and goofy best friend, Chuckie. That alone is reason enough to watch this movie. Good Will Hunting is a special kind of movie that sticks with you for the rest of your life and reminds you of the magic that use to make movies so wonderful.

3.  Nightcrawler (2014)

Nightcrawler is a thrilling and creepy journey into the life of L.A. crime journalism that will shock you to your core. It follows a cameraman looking to capture the grittiest and ugliest crime in the city and who will stop at absolutely nothing to ensure he has the perfect shot. Jake Gyllenhaal knocks it out of the park with his performance and turns what would have been an average movie into one of the best thrillers in recent memory. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time and makes you rethink everything you thought you knew about news.

4. Fruitvale Station (2013)

The final hours of Oscar Grant’s life are portrayed in this chilling and brutal true story. Director, Ryan Coogler succeeds in creating a movie that makes you root for Oscar the whole time even though he was viewed as a villain in real life. It’s a movie that will tug at your heart strings and make you question so many different issues. It will stick with you for many years to come. Also upcoming superstar, Michael B. Jordan, gives the performance of his life as the sensitive and loving Oscar.

5. The Exorcist (1973)

Quite no other movie has captured such terrifying and realistic horror quite like The Exorcist did all the way back in 1973. A true classic and deservingly so. You already know the story, the characters, the ending, and the scary scenes; so why suggest this film? Well because this is the best horror movie of all time because it focused on drama, characterization, humanity, love and genuine horror. With all of the “Horror” movies being released now a days focusing on jump-scares every 5 minutes, it’s refreshing to go back and watch a film which scared audiences without vast amounts of gore and zombies and torturing killers. This is a film that deserves all the praise it constantly gets and also deserves you to watch it on a dark, stormy night!

6. Survive and Advance (2013)

Another beautifully executed documentary to show up on this list, Survive and Advance follows the life of coach and motivator, Jimmy Valvano, and the Cinderella run his NC State basketball team went on in 1983. It’s part of the “30 for 30” series that ESPN did and this is by far the best film in the series. You don’t have to know anything about Valvano or college basketball to enjoy this inspiring film that will make you pursue your wildest dreams after watching the film.

7. Natural Born Killers (1994)

Talk about a crazy, crazy, crazy ride. Natural Born Killers is one of the most underrated films I can think of and was years ahead of its time when it was first released back in the 90’s. Director, Oliver Stone creates a visually stunning and incredibly creative film about two runaway killers who begin to kill more and more as the news stations begin to make them into household names. Like other Oliver Stone films, this one may not be for everyone, but if you go into with an open mindset, then I promise you that it will absolutely blow you away with how innovative and bonkers it is.

8. Beginners (2010)

One of the more simpler and refreshing film on this list, Beginners does so much by saying so little. It focuses on a son who must deal with his aging father who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and also has recently come out of the closet. It is a movie that finds so much success by showing the innocence in life and how we should all strive to believe in a little “magic” every once in a while. Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor give two incredible performances as the father and son duo and bring two usually stereotypical character’s to joyous life.

9. Short Term 12 (2013)

A truly heartbreaking film that opens your eyes up to the disparity that so many residential treatment facilities deal with. Another underrated film with a strong cast and even stronger themes. Short term 12 will make you shed tears, lots of them, and will make you give a big hug to the closest standing teenager. The director, Destin Cretton, explores many controversial themes and issues that troubled teenagers face, yet never screams these out blatantly to the audience. He instead tells a potent story that makes you address these issues head on.

10. Annie Hall (1977)

Much like TheExorcist, I am fully aware that you have most likely already seen AnnieHall, probably dozens of times at that, but this is a list of the 10 movies you should see on Netflix and no list would be complete without the “original” Romantic Comedy. AnnieHall is Woody Allen’s masterpiece and for good reason. It is one of the most honest and creative love stories to ever grace the big screen. It’s a film that inspired countless others, yet only a few have created the same magic that this movie did almost 40 years ago. It’s a movie about love, laughter and most importantly life that will never fail to make you laugh out loud and have a smile on your face as the credits roll. It’s a film worth seeing again, even if it is your 13th time!
